Since retiring from a career that I loved 27 months ago I have learned much about myself that I did not know before. To be a Kindergarten teacher one has to possess an abundance of patience and caring. I also like the stability of routines (crucial for young children’s development) and setting and attaining goals for myself. Well, I learned that, while being endlessly understanding and tolerant with young children, I am not always patient with the progress the Foundation has made to date. I have set a goal for myself that at times feels incredibly distant.
There is one important detail though. Bright Beginnings Foundation is still in its infancy. I need to keep reminding myself of this fact. I also need to review our progress every so often.
During the last eight years of my teaching career I sat with many concerned teachers on the Surrey Teachers’ Association anti poverty committee pondering the plight of thousands of our students coming to school hungry and without appropriate winter clothing for playing at recess. I remember feeling frustrated and helpless. I also remember feeling like I was a “talking head”. I know what the problem is and I know about how we got here. But I felt powerless to help. I am just one person. What can one person do to make a difference in someone’s life? I remember thinking that it would have to be some thing that would change a life, or lives, permanently. It could not be a temporary “bandaid” solution.
The STA and Vancouver Elementary Teachers’ Association anti poverty committees came together to host Dr. Donna Beegle as our keynote speaker at our annual teachers convention. Followers of my blog will remember her personal story. Without a doubt, Donna’s story was truly inspirational!
Two years ago, almost to the day, the Surrey Teachers’ Association (STA) executive and membership voted unanimously to support the BBF. Their belief in our mission meant the world to us and gave us the momentum to work hard to right the injustice for so many of our vulnerable young adults.
Yesterday a terrific article about Bright Beginnings Foundation was printed in the Surrey Leader and the Peace Arch News. I have been waiting (not too patiently) for media attention for a long time. Here is a link to the article.
We have joined the #GivingTuesdayCA campaign as a partner. November 29th, 2016 is the big day. I am excited to say that in the next day or two we will be rolling out our campaign on social media. Over the next month we will be posting updates. There will be much more to come soon.
Our next big job is to approach businesses, community organizations and unions to partner with us. We are looking for partners who will help us financially as well as network, host fundraisers and mentor.
Working on the BBF board is indeed a stretch for someone who likes routines and stability. But after reviewing how far we have come in such a short time I feel revitalized! Big things are happening and I can’t wait to get going! (See? There’s that impatience I was talking about ;^) ).
Bright Beginnings Foundation may still be in its infancy but we are ready to go from baby steps to longer strides.
