WHAT TO KNOW IF YOUR STUDENT HAS BEEN SHORTLISTED FOR THE BBF BURSARY
If your recommended student has been short-listed for the Bright Beginnings Foundation Bursary we will need to know, as soon as possible, if they were chosen to receive a full-ride scholarship from another organization.
WHAT TO KNOW IF YOUR STUDENT WAS AWARDED THE BBF BURSARY
- Bright Beginnings Foundation would like to be acknowledged in the Commencement Program booklet as a Contributing Organization.
- We will likely be sending one or two of the BBF Directors to your Commencement Ceremony to present our award to the student. Please let us know the date, time and location of the ceremony.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
- Our nominee is working on their bursary application. I know the due date is Feb. 25th. Is there a specific time my student needs to submit the application online by?
Midnight on February 25th
- Is the combined family income, of $50,000 or less, before or after taxes?
This figure is the net income, or after taxes
- Regarding the specific documents for family income, how far back will be required?
We will only be looking at the latest statement.
- Do you accept applications from students with Permanent Resident (Landed Immigrant) status?
Yes, assuming that the student intends to reside in Canada. In Canada a landed immigrant is considered a Permanent Resident.
- Can graduating students who are in BC under a student permit apply for the Bright Beginnings bursary?
If this student is an international student, then unfortunately, this student is ineligible to apply.
- My student’s family has not received their permanent residency and they study on a student permit. Are they able to apply?
All Secondary scholarships offered in Surrey now specify that the student must have Permanent Residency or be Canadian Citizens. BBF follows these guidelines as well.
- One of our students is taking their level one of trade through our district program. Are they eligible to apply?
Unfortunately, they are not eligible. The BBF Bursary is designed to provide full-ride bursaries to students attending a public post-secondary institution, and district programs fall outside of our mandate.
- Which post-secondary institutions can a BBF Bursary student attend?
Students wanting to attend a private school are not eligible to apply. We accept only applications from students planning on attending accredited British Columbia public post-secondary university, college or trade schools.
A complete list of BC public postsecondary institutions can be found here:
- Is there a specific form for writing a letter of reference?
A letter on letterhead and sent as a jpeg will do.
- In past years we sometimes have been able to submit 2 student names. Are we able to do so again this year?
Yes. In years past we offered our bursary to just Surrey’s inner-city schools. But for the last few years, we have opened it up to all Surrey Secondaries and Learning Centres. As a result, the number of applications we receive has grown immensely.
- A question from a student:
My school selected nominees internally through staff without a student application process, and I was not made aware of the opportunity until after the nominations were submitted.
I fully meet the financial aid criteria and other eligibility requirements, and would like to ask if applications without a school nomination or alternative reference in place of that are permitted and/or considered.
We are sorry, but we’re unable to accept the submission because we follow a strict protocol to accept applications that come through the schools. We need to ensure the process is fair and equal.
